Public Holiday. — A numerouslysigned memorial was addressed to the Superintendent yesterday asking him to proclaim Thursday next, the day of the Waimea Steeplechase Meeting, a public holiday. It will be seen by advertisement that his Honor has acceded to the request.

Illness of Sister St. Michael. — We are sorry to learn that the lady at St Mary's Convent known in religion as Sister St Michael, but generally distinguished by the public as the " English Sister," is seriously ill, the constant hard work in connection with forming, and bringing to its present state of excellence, the school at which she does duty, having told upon a not over strong constitution, and brought on an illness of a distressing and dangerous character. We trust that medical skill may speedily alleviate this lady's sufferings and restore her to health, for whatever differences of opinion may .. exist with regard to the Sister's religious views, none can fail to respect and admire the unselfish devotion which voluntarily renounces wealth, rank, and the enjoyment of social life, in order to teach the young, relieve the pcor, and comfort the sick.
