Serious Accident. — A painful accident occurred on Wednesday last to John Osborne, a lad in the employ of Dr Cotterell, who, having obtained some tartaric acid and soda placed it with water in a bottle and corked it down. A few mioutes afterwards he was called out of the room, and on his return, the bottle, which lie bad placed on the table, exploded, and a piece of the glass struck him on the left eye inflicting a severe gash on the eyeball. He was taken to the hospital where he is doing as well as can be expected, but it is feared he must lose the use of his eye. Nelson Harmonic Societt. — Last evening the Nelson Harmonic Society gave a roost successful public concert iv aid of the fund for liquidating the payment of their new pianoforte. The Provincial Hall was well filled, and the audience were well entertained. The programme was a very varied one, comprising concerted iostru mental pieces, overtures for band, pianoforte solos, and a duet for harp and piano, with some well-selected songs, glees and choruses. The pianoforte pieces were chosen with a view to illustrating the capacity of the new instrument, which was found equal to the fullest expectations of the Society, both as regards volume and quality of tone. The instrument was manufactured to the order of Mr. Stanton by Messrs John Broad wood and Sons, and fully justifies their high reputation as makers. We trust the proceeds of this concert will go far towards accomplishing its, object.
