The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1873.

Mondat next being a public holiday, the Evening Mail will be published at 11 a.m. The Postmaster has requested us to state that tlie Post-office will be open for the delivery of letters to-night after the Tararua's mails are sorted. The Tararua may be expected here about 10 p.m. Royal Magnet Variety Troupe. — Mr Small, the agent for the above Company, arrived by tbe Phoebe last night with the view of making arrangements for a eeries of performances by them in Nelson. "Lottie,'' the accomplished lady gymnast, is one of the principal attractions of the troupe which has been drawing crowded houses in Auckland. Murray's Circus.— -There was a good attendance at the Circus last night, and we were glad to see it, for the whole performance is well deserving the patronage of the public. We regret that we have not space to refer to it in detail, but we may say that the horses are all exceedingly well trained and cleverly ridden, while of the performance on the trapeze and horizontal har it is impossible to speak too highly, nothing approaching it ever having been seen in Nelson before. The clown and his jokes possessed the usual attraction for the juvenile members of the audience, aod ihe whole entertainment is well worth a visit. The Steamer Phcbbe arrived frora Manukau about one o'clock this morning, greatly to the surprise of everyone, no notice of her departure having appeared on the telegraph board. How it was that the omission occurred we have not been able to learn, but the inconvenience and annoyance that have been caused by it are very great, the more so, that she sailed again for the South by this morning's tide, before the fact of her arrival was generally known. Chiarini's Circus Troupe were passengers by her, en route for Wellington, where a series of performances is to be given. The manager has been detained in Auckland, by a writ issued against him by one of 'his employees. Anniversary Holiday. — Great preparations are bein^ made for celebrating the anniversary of the Province on Monday next. Unfortunately, the Foresters and Oddfellows, who on previous years have united in keeping this holiday, have been unable to work together on the present occasion, the result of which is that two fetes are to take place, the Foresters giving theirs, for which they have secured the attendance of Murray's circus, in the Botanical Gardens, and the Oddfellows holding theirs in H_tr Richardson's paddock in tbe Maitai Valley. The handbills and posters which are to be seen on every available wall in the town supply the bill of fare provided by each of these Societies. The Foresters will close the day's proceedings with a ball in the Volunteer Hall, and the Oddfellows in a similar manner in their own hall. The Lady Barkly makes a trip to Motueka early in the morning, returning to Nelson at once, thus affording our friends on the other side of the Bay an opportunity of being present at the festivities.
