The Hon. Mr. Casey, Minister of Lands for Victoria, who is at present making a tour through New Zealand, is about to inspect the Ngakawhau coalfield on behalf of some Victorian capitalists. Nelson Gasworks. — The contract for levelling and preparing the site for the gasworks has been let to Mcßae and party for £194 175,, that for carting the pipes to John Lock for Is. llf d. per ton. The works nnder the former contract were commenced tbis morning. Murray's World Circus.-— This circus troupe arrived from Picton this morning, and intends giving a few performances in Nelson, the first of which takes place to-morrow evening. The company comprises Miss Murray and several celebrated equestrians. Oddfellows' Hall. — Dr Carr gave another of his entertainments last night, again to a crowded house, wbeu the same amusement was caused by his delineations of character, and by the antics of those who were placed under mesmeric influence. Dr Carr will give another performance this evening, which will positively be his last in Neleon. A Venturesome Trip. — A somewhat risky boating feat has just been performed "by Mr R. Richardson who started byhimself on Monday morning for Picton in his tiny craft the Bismarck. The weather at the time was far from 'being calm, and its state was such when the little Bismarck was seen to enter the French Pass that many a larger boat would have hesitated to venture through it. Mr Richardson however has accomplished his journey in safety, a telegram having been received from him stating that he; reached Picton on Tuesday morning, himself and crew, (the latter consisting of a dog) all well . Nelson Scientific Association. : — There was a meetiog of this Society last evening in the Government, Buildings, . Treasurer, Mr. J. Holloway; Hon. Sec, Mr T. Mackay. Mr T. Mackay read a paper on the cultivation of sugar-beet in New Zealand, on which there was an interesting discussion. A vote of thanks to Mr Mackay for his useful and practical paper closed the business of the evening.; ,'.. , Wesleyan Sunday Schools.— The anniversary of these schools has been celebrated this week, two appropriate sermons beirjg preached on Sunday by the Revs. W. Cannell and, W. J. Watkin, the collections after the services amounting to £9 4s 7d. Ia the afternoon of tbat day addresses were delivered to the children, teachers, and parents by the Revs. Mr. Waters of Auckland, and Mr. Dumbold, of Taranaki, of the Primitive Methodist Society, hymns suitable for the occasion being sung by the children.. On Tuesday afternoon the scholars assembled in the Botanical Gardens, and enjoyed themselves in playing croquet and various other games. They then returned to the Church grounds, where an ample tea was provided for them, that for the adults taking place at 6 o'clock, when there was a larger attendance tban has been known for many years past. A public meeting followed, when, after those present had been addressed by Mr H, Drew, the chairman, the Secretary read the report, which showed a credit amount of £22 9s 3d, the expenditure on the tea, books, printing and advertising, &c. amounting to a like sum. The numbers on the Books are:— Male teachers 11, female 7; male scholars 72, fema'e 78. . Superintendents — Messrs. W. Webley and T. Usher; School Secretary — Mr. Miller; Librarian — Mr. T. Usher, jun; The meeting was then addressed by tbe Revs. W. J. Watkin and W. Cannell, and Messrs Harvey, Riley, Usher, and Wagg. A Committee was appointed for the ensuing year consisting of Messrs SbannoD, Constable, Thomson, Spencer, Campbell, DicksoD, Crisp, Blick, Haddow, Trask, with the Superintendents and Secretary of the school. Mr Moorhouse, Treasurer. Mr Robert Lucas, General Secretary. Messrs Bethwaite and R. S. Lucas, Auditors. Votes of thanks were then passed to the chairman aod to Miss Younger for her valuable services in presiding at the organ, and for the time and trouble she had devoted to teaching the children singing, also to the various ladies and gentlemen who bad given tbeir assistance at the tea tables. The benadicwas then pronounced, and the meeting separated.
