"THE BOARD OF WORKS — I AM THE BOARD."

To the Editor or the Nelson Evening Mail

Sir, — The present very efficient Secretary of the Town Board, like my late friend J. L. Bailey, evidently considers himself " The Board." Not one word is said in disparagement of him or any of his works in the letter referred to; and I would recommend the advice of the imperturbable French diplomatist to his especial notice — "Above all, no zeal." Pedestrian.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NELSON EVENING MAIL' Sik — The disruption between two FriendlySocieties of this city causes a deal of talk, and the public, not knowing the correct cause of the disunion, are apt to jump to conclusions. The public papers having noticed. ihe affair, I thought some more able pen connected with the above Societies would have offered some explanation. On behalf of the Oddfellows, I think they have but little to offer, but may simply state that they have not been invited by the. Foresters, for reasons best known to themselves, excepting a polite note from the Secretary of their Anniversary Committee (without any apparent authority from his Court), inviting the Nelson Lodge. to join in procession and amusements of the day, which simply means, come over and take a friendly cup of tea with us, only bring your own sugar. Previous to receiving the above invite, the Oddfellows had made up their minds to have an excursion or a picnic on the ensuing holiday, as many prefer that to spending eight or ten hours, more or less, in the Botanical Gardens on a hot summer day. I think that is one reason that we are not anxious to join in the amusements of the day. Most likely there are many more; report states ■ many causes of this disunion, which I have not the time or inclination, to trouble you with. I beg to ask the public not to condemn either party, but hear both sides, and give a verdict according to evidence. Yours, &c, Friendly.
