The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, JANUARY 20, 1873.
' His Honor the Superintendent of Maryborough arrived in Nelson yesterday aftef a rough journey on foot through the Rai Valley, heavy rain having fallen during the two days occupied by the trip. Resident Magistrate's Court. — William Reed was this morning brought before the Resident Magistrate charged with using profane and indecent language in Collingwood-street. He was fined 40s and costs, or in default seven days' imprisonment. New: Coal Discovert. — Specimens of coal have been sent to the Superintendent within the last day or .two from the Aorere district, where, it is said, five new '.seams have been discovered, one of them <&>ur feet thick and another three feet. The thickness of the others is not reported. The, specimens sent are from the tbreeieet seam, and are said to be very excellent
coal. The exact. locality in which they were found is not stated, but further particulars will no doubt, be forthcoming shortly. Chukch op England Sunday Schools^ — The annual picnic was given to the children attending these schools on Saturday last in a paddock kindly lent for the purpose by Mr Brunner. About 500 were present, and they were kept amused by games, of every f description during the afternoon, after which tbey all sat down to a capital tea. Addresses were delivered by the Revs. Gr. H. Johnstone, and R. J. Thorpe, and the party broke up about 8 o'clock after spending a most pleasant day. A Steamee Race. — A good deal of interest was displayed on Saturday last in tbe trip of the steamers Rangitoto and Wellington from Nelson to Ficton, as it was generally understood tbat they were to make a race of it. The Wellington cast off from the wharf here at a little after half-past nine, and was followed after an interval of about 20 minutes by the Rangitoto, of tbe ability of which boat to catch her rival, grave doubts, it is said, were entertained by Captain Mackie, as she had not been on the slip for a long time, and, consequently, was very foul. It was thought by those who watched their progress up the bay tbat the Australian was gaining on tbe New Zealauder, but nothing certain was known until the telegraph board announced : — "Picton. — Arrived : Rangitoto, at 5.45 p.m. — Wellington, at 5.50 p.m," the former boat having proved the winner by some 25 minutes. Whether it was that she was unable to reduce her racing speed in tiraa we know not, but the Rangitoto brought her performance to a termination by running into the wharf that has been newly erected at Picton, thereby causing certain damage, though to what extent we have not yet learned.
