CORRESPONDENCE.
To the Editor of the Nelson Evenikg Mail Sir — I see by an announcement that the Collector of the Board of Works will be at his office to-day to receive the rates due on the 30fch of November last. This may be right, hut I have always been under the impression that it was a part of that gentleman's duty to go round and collect the rates, not for the ratepayers to lose their time in waiting upon the Collector, for he is not always to be found at bis office. It is the invariable practice in England and elsewhere for collectors to call upon the householders for all manner of rates, and why it is not so in Nelson I cannot make out. Friday is a very inconvenient time for me to call upon the Collector, besides I must lose nearly half a day's work, which is something in these hard times. I am, &c. A Ratepayer. January 3, 1873. y
