Wellington, Dee. 21. Mr. Brogden's navvies, ex Jessie Readmam wlioVere at work for the Provincial Government; on the|Evans' Bay road, struck 'to-day for 7s a-day of eight hours. They were being paid eightpence an hour. They have refused to continue to work on these terms and the works are stopped. It is expected they will resume on Monday morning. The men are detained in Wellington pending the decision of the Government regarding the Upper Hutt railway contract. If it is not signed they will be sent to other parts of the colony. Mr. Yogel is ill with the gout. He proceeds by the Kangitoto on Monday to attend the Postal Conference at Melbourne. He will be accompanied by Mr E. Fox, as private secretary, and Mr Kichardson. Chkistchtjrch, December 21. The grain market is almost at a standstill. Prices are merely nominal. No wheat is changing hands. Oats, 2s 4d to 2s 6d. Barley, none.
