To the Editor of the Nelson Eveking Mail < Fir —The annual examination of pupils from our Provincial Schools, and the gift of scholarships to the most deserving, has produced most admirable results. It has raised the standard rf education, and given to ouv most iute iigent and industrious children an opportunity they would not otherwise have enjoyed. It has developed, and publicly recognised, the intellectual leaders among those who are to follow us in the conduct ot affairs. So excellent a system must be carefully watched and guarded, that it may produce its highest results. Our last examination has been the most satisfactory of any we have yet had. I have seen the list of candidates, and observed the admirable success of many'of them with great interest and pleasure. But to this list, which now lies before me, there is added a " Note," which tells us that two of the boys examined " were educated at Stoke School until about a fortnight before the examination, when they were removed to Hampdeu-street. They were classed as Mr. Sunle>'s pupils, at that gentleman's particular request." I call the attention of the Central Board, of the Sclioolmasters' Association, of every Local Committee, and of every honest man "to that paragraph. I hope that the Central Board, guardians of our educational system, will speak; I hope that the Scboolrnastrrs' Association, concerned for the honor of. their profession, will be heard; I trust that Local Committees will be vigilant that no such thing shall escape their censure; and I am sure of the sympathy of every honest man when I express my most intense disapprobation. We are soon to have an exhibition and examination which will test the merits of our manufacturers; what shall we s*y of him who exhibits another man's work as hi 3 own. lam, &c, HOXBSTAS.
