WHAT I LIVE FOR.
The author of the following beautiful poem, is George Linmeus Banks, a native of Birmingham, born in the. year JB2l. Mr G-. L. Banks has successively edited* the Birmingham Mercury^ Durham 'f and Dublin Daily Express. * He^ha^alio written several light dramatic pieces for. different theatres, and published five volumes of verses. He is now associated with the London press, and resides in the metropolis. I live for these who lore me* Whose hearts are kind and true $ For the heaven that smiles above me, - jftnd awaits my spirit too ; For all human tie 3 that bind me ; - For the task by God assigned me, I '■ ■•. And the good that I can do, |& . ■ 1 live to learn their story, w:' Who've suffered for my sake 5 ■ To emulate their glory, K,^ And follow in their wake ; wBjL Bards, patriots, rnarfcyrs, sages, BHjb. ' The noble of all ages, Mf Whose deedß crown History's pages, Bf, And Time's great volume make. 8La^...... I Hve to hold communion HKwp. With all that is divine ; feel there is a union I^bHw;.. Twixt Nature's heart and mine ; profit by afHtction a P truth from, fields of fiction, I^^HHr^ow wiser from conviction, And fulfil each grand design, HB^BftAyc to hail that season, MBWwP" "By gifted minds foretold, W^" When men shall live by reason, **;•'■ And not alone by gold ; When. man to man united, And every wrong thing righted, The whole world shall be lighted As Eden was of old. I Jive for those who love me— ' For those who know me true ; For the heaven that smiles above me, And awaits my spirit too ; For the cause that lacks assistance, ]?or the wrong that needs resistance, For the future in the distance, And the good that I can do.
