Nelson College. — The^ prizes were distributed yesterday by his Houor the Superintendent in the presence. of a large number of ladies and gentlemen. A full report of the proceedings will appear id our next issue. The Reported Coal Discovery. — We are sorry to learn from Mr Lightfoot, who returned from the Hope this morning, that the coal seam which was reported to have been discovered iv that locality has proved to be nothing more than shale, and consequently is of no value whatever. Mesmerism. — Dr Cnrr purposes giving two of his seances next wet j k, on Monday and Wednesday evenings. The advertisement, which partakes somewhat of .the sensational, states that "he will demonstrate the startling, amusing, and mysterious phenomena of mesmerism, electrobiology, and electro-psychology." Caledonian Society. — - The sale of the Grand Stand Refreshment Rooms, and sites for booths at the Caledonian Society's gathering took place at the roomß of Messrs Stavert & Co. this morning, when the total sum realised was £33 10s, which was apportioned as follows: — Grand Stand £11, Mr Askew; Victuallers' Booths: No. 1, £6, Mrs Russell; No, 2, £o ss, Mr Tre> gea ; No. 3, £3 15s, Mr Stock ; Tea Booths: No. 1, £2, Mr Donaldson; No. 2, £1 15s, Mr Chisholm; Fruiterers' Booths: No. 1, £1 10s, Mr Burrell; No. 2, £2, Mr Phillips. A Bazaar, in aid of the funds for the erection of a Church of England parsonage, hss recently been held at Blenheim when the handsome sum of £360 was realised. The Blenheim Scandal. — The Marlborough News of the sth instant, an connection with the scandal, in which Mr Eyes plays so prominent a part, says : — \ " The day before yesterday his Worship (he Mayor of Blenheim and Mr Henry Dodson were severally served with writs, seeking to recover from the former £1000 for reading a resolution at the late public meeting, £800 for publishing the petition to his Excellency the Governor, and £200 for expenses in journeying to Wellington to vindicate his innocence; and from the latter £800 for publishing the same peti-. tion, and £200 for the same expenses. If these cases are to come before a jury, that jury will have to listen to a thrilling tale before they are called upon by the Judge for their verdict."
