GkassFike.— A fierce fire was ourning on the Maitai hills last night, and gave rise - to some little alarm among those, -who lived jn the neighbourhood. Too much care cannot be taken in this dry weather in j setting fire to the grass or fern on the bill gides, as when once lighted there is no saying where it will stop or what amount j of damage it may cauee. The City of Newcastle's PassenGEES.— The most heartfelt joy was experienced in Wellington on the news reaching there of the passengers in the missing boat having been saved. The Artillery Band, says one of the papers, " turned out with warm-hearted promptitude and paraded the streets for several hours. making the echoes ring with cheerful music. Mr Fox, whose wife was one of those rescued from death addressed the following characteristic letter to the Evening Post -.—"Sir— 4 Sweet are the teachings of adversity,' and sweet also is the remembrance of the kindness and sympathy received by me from the people of Wellington, to whom I beg you to allow me to return my heartfelt thanks."
