Provincial Government Prize Firing. — The firing for the Provincial championship will take place at the Maitai butts on Thursday next. Evenings with the Musical Composers — We remind, our readers of the entertainment which under this title will be given at the Assembly Room this evening. The Hydrant ordered by the Board of Works for the water-cart arrived from.. Melbourne by the Tararua this morning, N and is now in use. There will therefore be no occasion to remove that which is kept in the pedestal in Trafalgar-street. Caledonian Society. — We are glad to find that the Caledonian Society of Nelson have decided upon presenting one of their medals to Mr Hamill, the mate of the City of Newcastle, in recognition of the bravery displayed by him' on the occasion of . the wreck of that unfortunate vessel. ' Brutal Assault.-— There was some little excitement created this morning by the rumor that one of the seamen on board the Tararua had shot one of his mates, and quite a crowd assembled at the Courthouse when the case was brought on for trial." The story is as follows :— On Friday last William Murray, a coal-triioa-"mer, and Richard Vaughan, a seaman, bad a quarrel, when Murray threw the latter ,: down and bit his nose vejy nearly off. ; ; Tbis 'inWnjn^ ; for liquor; jS^
Vaughan drew a revolver that he had with him and shot him through the fleshy part of'the leg, . An information wsr theu laid by Vaughan on account of the first assault. Murray was not so badly wounded as to prevent his walking from the lock"-up to the Court-house, but Dr Boor, who had attended him, stated that he considered he was in a state of intoxication aud unfitted to defend himself, or to cross-examine witnesses. He was, therefore, remanded until to-morrow at 12 o'clock.
