This is the pleasant style in which the Wellington papers write of one another. The , Post of Saturday says : — The Independent has a cackling paragraph in its . this morning's issue on some remarks we made yesterday respecting two eggs sent us with horse hairs in them, and a suggestion is thrown, out, that had we put the eggs under some old hen, a practical result might have been attained. We shall be happy to hand the eggs over to our contemporary, and, judging from his writings, we have no doubt that among . his staff he can find some old hen to devote its time to their incubation. A Distinction Without a Difference - — The following amußing anecdote is now going the rounds of the clubs and messes. It is is said to have happened quite recently. An officer was ordered on duty from one station to another. In his tra veiling claim appeared the item, " Porter, 6d." This was struck out by the War office. The officer wrote back stating that the porter named had conveyed his baggage from one station to another, aod that he would otherwise have had to make use of a cab, which would have cost one shilling and sixpence. In answer to this he received an official reply, stating that under these circumstances his claim would be allowed, but that he should use the term "porterage" instead of "porter." He unable, we presume, to resist the temptation which seized him, answered to the effect, although he could not find a precedent for the word " porterage " he would nevertheless do as he was told, and wished to know whether he should use the. term " cab(6)age" when he meant "cab. "i The result, we hear, was a severe reprimand from the War Office..
