Tbe fall being very great, death must have been instantaneous. A document was found in his waistcoat pocket stating the reason for his committing the rash act, and also containing his will. An old resident in New Zealand, who ' has suffered by the action of rivers on their banks, suggests the following plan " to prevent, or lather to alter, the change in their course." He says : — " The plan I suggest is a log about 50 or 60 feet long anchored in the river by one end to a chain, connected to about six small anchors, the other end attached to a Spanish windlass on the shore for tbe purpose of altering the angle by takiDg in or Blackening off. My proposition is, that, as tbe rebound of the current is from angle to angle, by altering that angle above the required place, say even as far * as a mile, tbe rivers by this means might be guided .instead of restrained. When this appliance is no longer required it might be liberated, or removed, which is a great difficulty with fascines. My reason for using a number of small anchors is that their spread would hold firmer than one large one on account of the silt. It behoves a man to be careful how he repeats startling English news, even as rumour. Last Sunday evening a gentleman was disturbed at his devotions (whiskey hot ?) by the arrival of a note from a newspaper office. " Dear Sir,— l have traced to you the promulgation of a report that money in London had risen to 10 per cent., and that a political crisis had occurred. Would you oblige me by saying if this is authentic?" My friend could only say tbat what be had said was merely a repetition of the gossip of Collinsstreet. A few hours later he was aroused from the peaceful slumber of the just by a violent assault upon the door knocker. Thrusting his head from the window, he demanded the business of tbe aggressor. "Please, sir, I have come from the editor of tbe — about the private telegram." My friend's reply was more forcible than polite. It would probably have shocked Dr, Cairns. He bat up the rest of the night at a first-floor window, with a pail of water in readinesß for the next press messenger. And. he has since evinced extraordinary caution in saying anything which could be construed into the dissemination of news. — Australasian. What an Earthquake can do. — The Sydney Empire, in referring to the earthquake recently felt in New South Wales, says:— "lfc may be regarded as certain that the earthquake felt at Newcastle and at Jervis Bay, at Sydney, and Orange, extended over an area of not less than 150 miles in length and breadth — that is, 22,500 square miles. And if we take the Bolid cr Jet of tbe earth at twenty miles in thickness, which, according to scientific authorities, is certainly within the reality, it "follows tbat a mass of earth and rocks comprising 450,000 cubic miles, or 1,393,920,000,000 cubic yards of solid matter were moved by the bidden force which caused the vibration. These figures give but a very inadequate idea of the gigantic force to which the phenomenon observed by many of the inhabitants of this country on Friday evening are traceable. The earthquake which destroyed Lisbon was felt from the shores of Finland on one side to the St, Lawrence io America on the other, an area of 7,500,000 square miles; so tbat the mass of matter moved by the tremendous force which caused that catastrophe must have been more than 333 times the amount above stated — that is, over 464 trillions of cubic yards." " Justifiable Suicide.— -Is suicide ever justifiable ? A Pittsburgh paper states tbat a melancholy case of self-murder occurred near Titusville, Pennsylvania. The following schedule of misfortunes was found in; the victim's left boot: — "I married a widowr who had a grown-up daughter. My father visited her house very often, fell in love with my stepdaughter, and married . her. So ray father became Jmy son-in-law, and my stepdaughter my mother, because she was my father's wife.
