METROPOLITAN POLICE.

'Colonel. Henderson, Commissioner of Metropolitan Police, has just published an account of this force for the last year. . From it we learn that there are about 10,000 men, special and ordinary. There is some difficulty in getting men of the proper height, though the standard is only five feet seven inches. ' During the year there were 30,000 convictions /or drunkenness, and 71,000 persons were apprehended within the metropolitan districts. Out of 5733 lost persons the police found and returned 2619 children and 446 adults. They were present at about 700 iires ; reported 120 persons as having been killed by accident in London streets, and 2500 as having been injured. In relation to this the report says that "no more difficult task can be imagined than that of persuading the public to take care of itself." Nearly 9000 stray dogs were picked up by the police during the year, and many of the men were severely injured in this " risky duty." It is stated that the police are " more and more liable to assault; nearly one in three was damaged while performing his duty in 1871, and the pension list for men irretrievably injured is continually being swelled in its proportions." The return does not include the City of London police, which is under the jurisdiction of the city authorities.
