The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1872.
Spring Grove. — The Wesleyan Sunday School anniversary will <be celebrated on Sunday and Monday next, on tbe former of which days two sermons will be preached by the Rev. H. Devvshury of Hokitika. On Monday there will a tea and public meeting. Tea to be on the table at 5 o'clock. Nelson Board of Works. — A spppial meeting of the Board was held laßt night, wheu it was unanimously sgreed that the rate for the current year should be three farthings io the pound, which would give a revenue of £1855, the property to be rated hpj'ng assessed ut £593,626 B_ainst £609,825 last yenr. From the report, of the Financial Committee it appeared thnt there were arrears of rates to the amount of £400. Public Hollidat. — There will be no lack of amusements on Monday next, which has been proclaimed a public holiday instead of to-day, the Prince of Wales' Birthday. Two steam excursions are advertised, one by Messrs N. Edwards & Co. to AdVle Island, the other by Mr Cross in the Lady Barkly, which will run between tbe wharf and the Babbit Is'and. A monster picnic under the auspices of the Artisans' Association will be held in the Maitai Valley if fine, but should' the weather prove unfavorab'e, there will be, instead, a tea parry at the Volunteer Hall. Under any circumstances the day's amusement is to be brought to a close by a ball. Io addition to these, ail of them pleasant ways of passing fh« holiday, there is to be a cricket match iD Victory Square betwe»n the Town and College Clubs, which will uo doubt attract many lovers of the game to the spot, another in the Botanical Gardens, and a Sunday School picnic in Brookstreet Valley. Amusement will also be provided at the Oddfellow's Hall, by Mr. Maclareo, who, assisted by several amateurp, will give a miscellaneous entertainment. Suspicious Case. — We hear from Picton that one of Messrs Brogden's contractors, named Thurston, who recently had some dispute in the R. M. Court is missing, and f ars are entertained that he has met with foul piny. It appears that on Saturday last he drew £326 for tho purpose of paying his work- people, und did pay a Dumber at the Picton end £195, reserving £141 for thosa engaged at Massacre Hill. He was seen on Saturday evening in PictOD, since which he has not been seen or heard of, nor did he leave by any of the vessels. Indeed it is not probable that he has disappeared of his own accord, since he left his horse in the stable, aud although some few men at this end areunpail, if be had voluntarily gone away, be would have taken more money with him, as he had an opportunity; besides which his contract was a remunera^ tive one. He is described as a sober, steady man, of fair complexion, shaved checks with goatep, Yankee-looking, wearing brown colored clothes, and a drab felt hat with a straw brim The police are engaged in trying to discover his traces since Saturday nigbt, but up to this afternoon without effect. Tt is said that he has still. money due to him by the firm which he did not care to draw, therefore the workmen who are unpaid are not likely to lose their wages ultimately.— Marlborough Press, November 6th.
