Wellington, November 7. Greville lias arrarged with the Anglo-Austra-lian Telegraph Agency for direct cablegrams, nnd in ten days ripnee expect direct telegrams from the London Times office, Fiji. October 26. — A petition has b~en signed and seDt to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, praying the Queen to annex the Fiji Islands to the British Colonies. At a public meeting a resolution was passed to the effect that annexation was needed to ward off ruin. Everything quiet along the coast. A salt spring has been found here, and is supposed to be valuable. Cnjii-xcnußcii, November 7. At a, meeting of the Christchurch Jockey Club held yesterday, it was resolved, after hearing the circumstances connected with the sale of Peeress within 48 hours before the time for starting for the Cup :— " That tbe Christchurch JockeyClub agree that the said mare should be distjuali- j fied from ever running where the Club r.les are ! in force, and she is hereby disqualified.'' November 7. \ A fire broke out in Pearce's stables yesterday. , A strong breeze was blowing at the time, and the Neivs office and adjacent buildings were in great dangf r. Fortunately, however, the fire was confined to the stables by the exertions of the firemen and others. WANGAiorr, November 7. The natives burnt the Fairiwi and Okehu bridges yesterday.
