A great social scandal in which Mr Eyes, the Provincial Secretary of Marlborough, is implicated, has of late excited the ire of the people of Blenhiem who have held a public meeting at which it was agreed to forward the following petition to His Excellency the Governor — The petition of the undersigned inhabitants of the province of Marlborough humbly sheweth — That a great scandal exists in this district having reference to Wm. Henry Eyes, Esquire, one of her Majesty's Justices of tbe Peace, Sheriff of the province, and who holds other high Goverment appointments. — That the public mind hero is much excited I about this scandal, and a public meeting has been held, showing unanimous indignation against the said William Heury Eyes. — Your petitioners are of opinion that it is neither for the peace nor well-being of the district that any person should hold these high offices, who is leading the life I which is alleged of the said Wm. Henry Eyes. — Your petitioners therefore humbly pray that your Excellency will cause enquiries to be made of the truth or otherwise of these reports, with a view to taking such steps as may seem best to your Excellency to remove this reproach from your petitioners. — Aud your petitioners will ever pray, &c. It is proposed with the consent of the Dean and Chapter, to erect a martyr pulpit in the nave of Exeter Cathedral, as a special memorial to Bishop Patteson.
