The total quantity of gold exported from lbe province of Wellington between April 1857 and September 1872, was. thirty ounces, valued at £120. The Theatre Royal,, Auckland had a narrow escape from being burnt down on' Saturday night. A large chandelier, bearing 12' kerosine lamps, fell to- the ground. The floor ignited, but was extinguished with great-difficulty. The Chronicle slates that Mr Moorbouse arrived in Wanganui by thes. s. Wanganui on Wedensday last, and intends remaining in the place and following the profession of a solicitor, &c. Negotiations are now pending between him and the leader of the Wanganui bar as to the purchase of the latter's practice. George Robertson, of Melbourne, has purchased the sole right of republishing in Australia Mr Anthony Trollope's forthcotn-. ing work on the Australian colonies, and the proprietors of the Australasian have purchased from Mr Robertson the right of republishing Mr Trollope's work in weekly portions in their newspaper. j— - An Editor's Lament.— The Charleston • Herald of Saturday last thus bewails the scarcity of news': : — "The prevailing strong winds blowing the past few days has completely put a stop to all shipping transactions on the Coast, and were it hot for tbe telegraph wire we should be completely cut off from the outer world. With matters, social and commercial, at a standstill ih our own district, and a failing in the supply of " exchanges " wherefrom to clip, the newspaper man's life is weary, a trouble to himself, and hard to bear." During the last few days, two stations in the Province of Canterbury have changed bands. One is Messrs. Mathias and Ensor's run in the Timaru district, consisting of 20,000 acres of country, which, with 12,000 sheep, has been sold for £11,500. The other is Benmore, on the West Coast road, 10,000 acres, which , with 250,0 sheep, has been sold for £1850. In both cases the buyers get delivery before shearing. An Attempt was made to rob the Bank of New Zealand at Macrae's, Otago, on Friday week. The perpetrators of the burglary had knocked a large hole through the sod chimney of the Bank, after which they had endeavored to pick the lock of the safe, but this they were unable to do, and accordingly gave up the enterprise and decamped without leaving a trace of their visit with the exception of the hole in the chimney. No clue whatever has been discovered as to the offenders, notwithstanding a very strict examination of the bank building and adjacent ground. The medical properties of the blue gum seem to be attracting the. attention of the. medical faculty in other parts of tbe world besides Europe. Late San Francisco papers give interesting particulars of a discussion in the local Academy of science on the tree. A Dr. Stout stated that he constructed a respirator so that the fumes from the leaves might be inhaled, and had found it of great assistance in cases of sors throat and chronic asthma. For the latter particularly it was very effective, and will afford ready relief in case of an acute attack. He had strewn the dried leaves in the basements of houses where there were bad odours, and had found it almost es useful as carbonic acid.
