Bapptist Church.— - The anniversary tea meeting that was to have been held in the Baptist Church, Bridge-street, this evening, is postponed until to-morrow, at 6 p.m. . Philharmonic Society. — The members of thiß Society will give their periodical concert, at the Provincial Hall, this evening. The programme is a wellarranged one, and the promoters are reasonably expecting a full house. Evenings with the Musical Com: poseks.—^Unavoidable circumstances have necessitated the further postponement of the next of this series of entertainments until Tuesday, the sth November, when a very pleasant evening's amusement and instruction may be looked for. Beitish and Foreign Bible Society. — A public meeting, in connection with the Nelson branch of this Society, will be held at the Provincial Hall, on Friday evening next. The Bishop of Nelson ■will take the chair, and addresses will be delivered by several clergymen of various denominations. . ... — i Waimea Roaitßoabd. — We would remind our Waimea readers that a special meeting of the Board will be held at the Bridge Hotel, on Tuesday next, for the purpose of taking into consideration the. complaints of any of the ratepayers who may feel themselves aggrieved by any. incorrectness that may have occurred in the ■valuation of their property. Nelson College. — We would call the attention of both masters and pupils in the Government schools to the advertisement which appears in our columns notifying that four scholarships at the Nelson College, tenable for jtwp years, are offered for competition, the examination for which will take place on the 4th December next. Those to be competed for by pupils at the country schools are of the value of £40 each, which will be given by the Provincial Government to meet the expenses of boarding at the College, while the: education itself is pro-: vided free of cost to the successful candidates. Hitherto, the offering of these scholarships for competition has been attended with most satisfactory results, as not only have those -who were fortunate enough to gain them proved themselves well worthy of the advantages thus placfed within their reach, which would have, otherwise been unavailable to them, but. it has raised the standard of education throughout the province, and baa stimulated many a boy to exert himself to the utmost to make the most of the opportunities afforded him of improving bis mind, the:benefit of which he cannot fail to reap in after years even though he should have been outpaced in the competitive examination. We sincerely trust that boih in town and country 7 the liberality-jof the ; Pro vincial XJouncil'i 1 and of the Governors'' and masterß^of ' the College in providing c these greai viand :■; v.alaable .-prizes . will ; be. r '■•duly-^app'redated, ; V nd tnatrthe numbVir of boys who prepare themselves for examiner, tiotf wilt in' itself -afford abundant ; proof J thatHthVy •way V; ,;p%^th(oser ;^hd r l>at &r ; '■■'vWonld - Ci;b,e deprived \ of- the : -means,. ; :' of ■■/p^iiainSpf^Bt '-Vliigher-^la^^ d^'^ejluca^!'
