" He notifies by advertisement in the Southern Cross that no alcholic liquors will be received as freights on board his schooner. Tbe Hawke's Bay Herald hears " that there is a native at present at Paki Paki, who has started business as a prophet and miracle-worker, and is doing a roaring trade. Any person brought to him afflicted with any malady of not a very severe character, he cures right off. If the disease is too. obstinate to be thus dealt witb, he can, at least, inform tbe patient when it will leave him or finish him, as the case may be. He has foretold, we learn further, that small-pox will break out at Poverty ' Bay and Wairoa on the 20th of October. When that takes place, he promises, to all those natives who will come to bim — and we presume, deposit a consideration — that he will make his gods surround them with a charmed ring, and that tbey can go even where the smallpox is raging without the slightest risk of infection. All that the captain did was to talk of what he would do. He has got the name of Tanata captain. Don't mistake plezure for happiness; it is intirely a different breed of dogs. There is exquizit plezure in happiness but there iz a great deal of plezure that haz no happiness in it.
