The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1872.

The system at present pursued ia regard to the election of members of the Local Committees of Education appears to be one that might be considerably improved upon. To some little personal feeling which was manifested in yesterday's proceedings may be attributed the unusually large number that assembled in the Provincial Halt, but on all ordinary occasions the attendance, of ratepayers is exceedingly limited, and is usually confined to nearly the same individuals, so much so that anyone who has been in the habit of attending such meetings for three or four consecutive years, can, with a tolerable amount of accuracy, predict whom he will see there. In all other* elections, one day is fixed for the nomination of candidates, and another for the polling, and we see no reason why a similar system should not be pursued in electing' members of our Local Committees. By the existing practice the large majority of householders are practically debarred from taking part in the proceedings, which usually occupy from a quarter-of-an-hour to . twenty minutes, at a time of the day when few can make it convenient to attend, whereas if a polling day were appointed on which those interested might record their votes between the hours of ten and four, those who were elected would have some claim to bn looked upon as the representatives of the householders generally, instead of owing their position to the voices of the twenty or thirty who, as a rule, attend on the day and at the hour named. <■ No 'amendment of the Act would.be necessary to bring about so desirable a change, as, the appointing of the time for the elections rests solely with the Superintendent, who; there can. be no doubt, would, upon" a representation to that effect being made to him by the respective committees, take the necessary steps to carry ouS their aug;geetion'j* We throw ■ out this ; Kinti' :> m,, jtibe hope that it m^y be acted, upon, as we feel convinced that it would prove the means of largely increasing the interest taken by the public in the great cause of Edacatibn.
