The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1872.

Local Committee of Education. — Dr Irvine and Mr R. Burn having forfeited tbeir seats in the Local Committee of the town by absenting themselves from three consecutive meetings, a fresh election has 1 been rendered necessary, which, as will be seen by advertisement:, ia to take place at the Court- House, on Tuesday nexf, at j noon. ■ A Stalagmite.— A beautiful stalagmite, obtained from the caves at Waugai peka, has been brought into town, and is j now on view at the Wakatu Hotel. It has been necessarily curtailed of some of its proportions on account of its great weight, which is now about two; cwfc., but the interior of this beautiful naturalise ia in perfect condition, and, is a sight well worth seeing. Oddfellows' Hall. — Mr. Maclaren advertises that he will give two entertainments, on Wednesday and Thursday evenings (not Thursday and Friday, as stated by mistake in the Colonist), consisting of a number of conjuring tricks, which, by the way, he performs very, cleverly, comic singing, and dancing, the whole to conclude with a laughable farce. Master Roscbw, "who evidently has a ta3te for the stage, is to take the part of " Sprightly," to perform on the tambourine, at which he certainly' is an adept, and to sing a character song, in which he is exr pected to execute the Samsonian feat of "bringing down the house.", The bill of fare is a liberal and an attractive one, and Mr. Maclaren hopes, to see a large company to enjoy the good things he has provided for them. Seven Emus have been hatched on Motatapu Island, Auckland. Steam was got up last Wednesday in one of the Port Chalmers locomotives, which was run through the recently made tunnel. Messrs. Connob and Mackat, of New Zealand, have obtained a contract for a steam postal service in Western Australia; subsidy £4000. yearly * . „. ; Messrs. Brogden are expecting some 200 immigrants by the Bebiagton, which left London on the 29th June, and may be now daily expected. A, Melbourne . Firm has received orders to buy 5000 bales of wool for a Berlin house. A large wool trade is expected to spring up between Victoria and Germany. . ■4-A Telegram from Keefton says :— • The lock-up is crowded with prisoners to suffocation. There is only one cell, 6ft. by 14 ft.,- containing 13 prisoners. ; Warrants have been issued , for ..three, others, but their arrest has been deferred in con--sequence of there being no room for them." , The Bench of Magistrates in Duriedin have stated that it is their intention at the end of next quarter; to have a remodelling! of the whole of the licensed houses;— to do away wjth the licenses of inferior houses, and to grant licenses to those of a superior e] ass — in fact," to have one superior house ■ inßtead of about two or three' inferior existing.jOnes. -■ ..,., :,-'... - ; ..•'• , , ■''.:.',].'■.■'...■■.'■, : Two New Saw-Mills are about to be . started in Marlborough— one by yMessra. Guliery and others in Brought'on's Bay', Kenepuru, in which . place they expect , to fina* timber toVei^plpyj^bem. for a considerable time; the other on the Wairau-road, in the vicinity of, Hayt's bush, where it is anticipated that there is siinicient timber to Bjj,Dply>.the mj[|lj|9r:foa^y ! ears.-^^ > e^. . > t j;::T^".^S;,G^^^^ibf'the ; !2nd inst. The te;le|'ray|'eDMn,rßply gave reliable infor- 5 " mation concerning the goldfields, and fully bore out the information published in this journal a Bhort time ago, to the effect that: there certainly Js jgoltT there, that no; one need go to those fields without having at least, twelvemonths' supply of provisions, and a horse and dray or pack-horses. The five adventurous miners, who, enticed by the glowing 'accounts of rapid fortunes to.be won on the far distant diamond fields, cleared out some few months since from the Karamea diggings, en route for- the Cape of : Good 'Hopo, have arrived at Natal safely. A letter received from them states that the news from the diamond field was. not ; encouraging, but still very few men were coming back therefrom. ' Natal' seemed entirely overstocked ■ with labor, the Kaffir hands ■driving', all white labor out of the market. The current ratp of wages there is s*. per week, or Is. per day for casual work. — Westport Times., , \ „.'■'>' Division of the Colony. — Mr. Macandrew has given."- notice of the following amendments on Mr. ' Reynold's resolutions:-— (1.) " That in order to provide a iriore efficient and economical administration of Government, it? 1 ? expedieut that New Zealand be constituted into two colonies divided by Cook's straits," (2.) " That provision be made for an equitable adjustment of "the annual charges arising out of the existing burdens of New Zealand; also whereby, the two colonies shall be subject to the same customs tariff, and confederated for . external purposes . common to each." (3.)" That a bill to give effect to these resolutions be prepared during the recess, and submitted to the Assembly next session." '■'.'.".'' The New Australian Rush. — The following are the latest telegrams, relating to the Townsviile and Port Darwin goldfields : — Townsviile, 6th, Sept. Reports" from Charter's Towers are much exaggerated; large numbers of miners are on theground, but those sinking have lost the lead, which is very narrow. Wash dirt is' stacked for want of water, and from present appearances, there is no in* ducement for new comers. All the alluvial sinking is taken up. — A telegram, received at South Australia from' Port Darwin* states that an auriferous repf has been discovered near Yam Creek telegraph station, and traced three miles. The gold is visible to the naked eye. The warden officially reported as follows : — " Twenty-two quartz claims are registered adjoining West Cotts. Fine stone has been procured from the Kapuhda claims. Rich stone in Neat's claim. Several others ; are reported nuriferou?. The Kapuhda party have applied for a lease of forty acres of Pine Creek." — Yam Creek, 6th September. No operations have yet been commenced. The parties are energetically .engaged in carting' stores from Port Darwin "before the rain 3 set in. The first shower of the season fell this morning. Diggers are sanguine of good alluvial gold being found, though nothing payable has been discovered yet.— Port Darwin, 6th: September. The Condor has 1 arrived with 120 passengers, all unprovided with stores; None of them bring means of transport. The' Government must act immediately, as the force here is totally inadequate to preserve order; otherwise, serious results may be. apprehended. ".Old age is coming upon me rapidly*," as the urchin said, when he was stealing apples from an old man's: garden, and saw the owner coming, whip in hand^
