"Wellington, August 28. Mr Macandrew last right opposed the resolutions, sayiisg that although he was not satisfied with the present administration of fc];e Public Works scheme, he did not think it would be worked any better by the present Opposition. Mr Wakefield and Mr Bryce supported, and Mr Carrington opposed the resolutions. Mr Bluett (Canterbury) opposed, and Mr Eolleston (Canterbury) made an able and. telling speech in favor of the Resolutions. He quoted J. S. Mill against too great * a centralisation of power and administration as tending to undermine the love of liberty and self-reliance. Hesaid that the General Government had become a departmental autojcracy, and foretold .that the time would come when the colony would, look back upon Mr Yogel as the greatest evil with which it 'could possibly have been afflicted. For his own part, while crediting the Colonial. Treasurer "with great zeal, ability, and honesty of intention, he looked upon him as the impersonation of all that was reckless and mischievous. He severely condemned the whole administration of the present Government, except the.' Native department. The premier, he said, had left .the .polony- groaning under the weight of the' three' iniliion loan, an,d gpne home; from whence he had, returned and gone into o&ce on thp strength of promises which he had falsified in every.'respect. Mr -Kichardsonf(Canterbury) and Mr ■ Peacock opposed, and Mr Johnston (Wellington) supported the resolutions. ;•!■ ; -•"- .;•.* . „ i '• • .. The ; . debate was adjourned on the' motion of . !
