' The Nevada.— The Board "of Health iias decided to quarantine t&e Nevada three days. The mail will be landed. The Church Hili..— A great improvement is being effected in the appearance of the town by cutting.dpwn a large number of the gum trees that lately disfigured the Church Hill, and prevented other and more ornamental trees and shrubs from flourieJiMa joe Taton.— We are glad to learn, that this gentleman, who was removed from the Port into town on a stretcher on Monday evening last, is still progressing favorably. Although, by no means but of danger yet, the symptoms that continue, to display themselves are as satisfactory as could possibly be anticipated. \' ' | ; ' ■'-- A New, ,Pi&MENX.~Mpst- persons who ; have any knowledgeLof. the colors used by artists, are aware that the expensive pig-* znent known as sepia is obtained, from the ink t»a^vbf the cuttle fish, which, when md otherwise itfeji&riad, ./orms^ tbiat V^Mi^kiifg paint. 1;; ■ ; ; . :bas on exhibition afc the Institute. To our thinking, it is nearly, if not quite, equal to| sepia. The color is "of all shades, : of a war-/ mer character, and ia much admired by ajlj who have seen it. He! has also a ; specimen' pf-its quality, which bias been on paper and exposed to tbe light ior nearly seven years, and appears to have undergone no alteration whatever, compared with the production before mentioned, which was painted about* fourteen days since. It is expected to make an acceptable addition to the color box, asweil as to become agreeably useful in mixing with and toning other colors. We nope that all admirers of the fine arts ; will pay the" Institute a visit for the ' , purpose of seeing this new production. . Major Paton's Accident.— A presentation of books accompanied by the following letter was made this morning by th,e family and friends of Major Paton to Captain Fen ley, of the barque William Prowse, on board of which vessel the accident' referred to occure.d :— " The family and friends of Major Patdn requests Captain Fenley's kind acceptance of the' | accompanying volumes, entitled, Wood's Natural History" of Man — Vol. I. Africa ; Vol. 11. Australia and New Zealand, as a small acknowledgment of his:dishiterested kindness and skilful attention to him in connection with the circumstances" consequent upon the terrible accident which has befallen him, and they also take the opportunity of expressing their hope that he may have a prosperous voyage and a happy meeting with his wife and children. -rNelson, August 27, 1872." ' The Otago Daily Times bas it on the ♦the best authority thac an estimable member of the Presbyterian Ministry living in the country has a haunted Manse. Many uoises are heard at unseemly times, and men do watch, but the cause is never visible to mortal eye. The Society for investigating Spiritualism should not overlook so, promising a field for their labors.,. Eeefton is likely to be well supplied with (coal, so says the Herald, two valuable seams having been' opened, one to the north and the other to the south of the township. Applications for leases have been forwarded to the Superintendent, but no reply has been yet received as to whether or not they will be granted. : Some excellent specimens of stone from the Just in Time claim, Inangahua, have been again brought into.Eeefton., The stone, when broken, shows gold plainly interspersed throughout. The reef, as at present opened up, is some four feet in width, at a depth of about 150 feet from the surface, and is worked from a drive put iv from the face of tho hill. The shares are getting in demand, and present holders are sanguine of having struck something good.
