PAELIAMENTARY.

Wellington, August 20. Mr. Orraond made his statement; to day relative to Public Works and Immigration, which shows that last year's credit of £810,025 had been reduced as follows : — By discount and expenses, £49,272 ; interest and sinking fund, £33,750 ; buildings, English agency, &c , £8,044, leaving £719,957 available for public works. This had been expended thus :— Eoads, North Island, £121,868; Eoads. West Const poldfields, £32,380; total railway expenditure, £212,287. Twelve miles of railway have been opened in the colony at a cost of about £49,200 ; 386 miles surveyed and prepared, costing £19,212; and 254 miles let, 50 of which are being constructed, and on which £103,348 have been paid ; plant for railways, and the Waitaki bridge have been paid for to the amount of £40,537. On the purchase of land in the North Island £49,664 have been expended, for which 403.815 acres have been acquired; 810 miles of telegraph line have been opened at a cost of £58,297 ; there haß been contributed to Road Boards, £100,000; spent on immigration, £46,656; Greymouth Protective Works, water supply, developement of coal mines, and refund of stamp duties, £c>,511. The department, including £7,184 for salaries and expenses of engineers, has cost £16,610, leaving on the 30th June an unexpended balance of £75,684.
