NELSON AND FOXHILL RAILWAY.

; The following was -telegraphed from Wellington by Mr Luckie yesterday : — •: ": "'Welmkgton, Montlay afternoon; " A deputation, consisting of tli? Eon Major Eichmoncl s the lion Dr Renwick, the lion Mr Edwards, and Messrs Curtis, Luckie, Richardson, Shephard, Parker, and Collins, waited on the lion Mr Heeves, Minister for Public Works, to-day, and presented the resolutions passed at the meeting in Nelson. H« replied in terms similar but fuller tlian last tc-legram. He dcclaied that it was the full intention of the Ministry lo carry out the Nelson and Foxhillline; they never intended otherwise. The survey pluns were completed, Imt the -working pluns.are not yet finished. He said that Mr Oarruthers had reported that all the calculations, would be completed in two or three weeks. Mr Carruthers will be sent to go over the line at the earliest opportunity. Ec -would have been sent before now but for the constaut reference to him regarding other lines. The Nelson ajid Foxhill line was not included in Mr Brogden's contract for various lines, but as soon as the plans were completed and the line examined, it will be submitted io Mr. Brogden or offered for public tender. In reply to Major Richmond, Mr. Reeves said that, in Mr. Carruther's opinion, two miles at the Port would require alteration, .is by the present plan the work would cost about £20,000 for the two miles. Mr. Luckie suggested the propriety of letting the lino in small contracts, as being cheaper, instancing the system of sub-contracts at Home, in which the chief contractor made large profits, which it was advisable tbe Government should save if possible. Mr. Reeves replied that the suggestion would be carefully considered. The deputation then withdrew. " Since the meeting, I again had an interview with Messrs. Reeves and Ormond, a? some of the members thought Mr. Reeves was not sufficiently definite. Mr. Keeves repeated the fu'lest desire to expedite the works. Mr. Orinond said the designs and working drawings of bridges, &c, were hcing pushed on, and when these were finished no delay would take place in calling for. tenders. I think the result is satisfactory. ■
