WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.
Tuesday, August 6, 1872. Board met at Bridge Hotel. It being . the first meeting since the election of a new Board under .the Highways Act, the minutes of meeting of ratepayers on July Ist were read, also those of July Bth and 9th recording tbe-re'sult of the polling, when Messsrs Barnicoat, Win, "Baigent, Rout, Holland, and R. M. Smith were declared elected as the members for the current year. ;; These members being all present, Mr Rout was chosen chairman; and Mr Barnicoat treasurer, for the current year, and Messrs Malcolm and were respectively re-appointed as overseer and as' secretary • and surveyor, •on the same condition as to duties, salaries, &c, as before recorded. Resolved : That as none of the members are. resiJent in Waimea West, and as Messrs Rout, Barnicoat, and Win are supposed to represent respectively . Stoke, Waimea East, and Dovedale, the three members residing in Waimea South, draw lots as to which .portions of f the district they shall be ; deemed to represent for this year. On doing so the lots fell to Mr Baigent for Spring Grove, Mr Holland for Wakefield, and Mr Smith for Waimea West. Lots were then drawn as to who should be tbe retiring members in July, 1873, For remainder of news see fourth page.

The minutes of previous meeting were then read and confirmed. '■■' Resolved; that his Honor the Superintendent be requested to proclaim ! the ,' subdivision of the district, in accordance with the plan and schedule of boundaries formerly transmitted. Resolved, that in reference to the communication of, the Provincial .' Secretary, dated May 15, 'the Secretary of < the Board reply that the repair of , -the causeway on the river-bed of the Waimea,, oh the west side of the Appleby bridge, is too costly a work . to be thrown on the Board,, and should* -in the opinion of the r Board , be at the" charge of the Goyernmenr r -by . whom. it was constructed. Thei !overseeß:: reported -that the late floods had damaged the approaches of the Wai-iti,'of which those near Bell Grove Inn and-Pigeon Valley have been repaired. In this valley the river, by washing away /j! a pieceof land, has allowed the road' to be taken in a direct line, where hitherto it hadrgone through Mr Baigent's land. :; This had been done at a cost of r £7. In the same valley Mr Siggelkow has completed his contract for forming new road. Some outlay Tequisite/to protect the road has been necessary to amount of £15 15s. Mr B. Fairhall submitted his terras for the new road which the Board had brushed,; viz., exploring road, £5 ; land, , £3 per, acre ; compensation £20. ; The stream by the late Mr Trower's fence, in Eighty-eight Valley, having been filled up ,: with gravel, causing damage, he bad let a contract for the removal as gravelling on a portion of a main road at the price of a late contract, viz., £l per chain. Some protective works at the bridge near .the Forest Inn are being done. Mr: W. Boddington has "completed his contract for gravelling in Maddpck's bush, but he had lost his screen, which was -washed down the river. The brick bridge lately erected near Spring Grove church requires; an extension : of the south-west, wing for •about twelve feet, to protect the approach, which is liable :to he damaged by floods; an offer has been .made to do the work for £5. In Waimea West Mr C. Schroder has completed his contract for gravelling tbe Port road ; other repairs have been done to the/amount of £7 ; 2a. Some cuttings have been made and the road improved in. Sundry Valley, Dovedale, costing £2 14s. In Waimea East, an extra laborer will be required for some time; on the Appleby road, about fifteen chains require a coat of gravel;: recommends that tenders be invited for carting shingle from the Richmond wharf towards Greig's hill; the watercourse near Black's requires widening, as in floods the water breaks over' the road. " . The Overseer having stated that Mr G. Show reported. his belief there is a I better line of road than that blazed by Mr Fairhall, was authorised to get it blazed, so as he might go along it, and 'if satisfied, to have a horse-track brushed. In the 'meantime, the consideration of Mr Fairhall's terms to stand over. Resolved : That the Overseer' and Surveyor/meet the members for Waimea South on Monday next, and, inspect the line of road in Quail Valley, also that '-.'. fenders be: invited for the necessary works. -. The Overseer was desired to retain £4 .' froth. W.Boddington for lost screen, the amount to be paid if it should be found; also,: to have the addition made to the bridge at Spring' Grovei '": Mr Fairhall attended, and threatened to bring an action against the Board ifithe proposed coil vert or. splash Were made ; on , the road in Pigeon Valley at the place indicated by Mr T. Price, who also threatens an action if it is not made. As the ditch conveying the water/complained of by Mr Price. was made by the Government, the Board 'declines to do anything at present. A letter Was received from the Pro vi riy cial Secretary, stating that £250 had been , paid to the credit. of the Board, and £250 , to the Moutere Board, to be expended in accordance with the recommendation of the Provincial .Engineer in easing all. the steep gradients on the existing line of road between Waimea West arid Moutere. The Secretary was directed to report as, soon ns he could on tbe best mode of expending the amount, and to reply to the. Government that ;the. Board would 7 take the earliest opportunity of attending; to their wishes. : ;> A letter from Mr. G. Verry, complaining of the road, leading from Bridge Valley r to Pitfure being fenced in to the very great inconvenience ef persons wishing to gravel that /way. The Secretary was directed to send notice to the parties causing the obstruction. A letter from Mr. A. Harley was read, calling attention to the dangerous state of a bridge on the bye-roa!l by Mr. Martin's, and enclosing an offer for erecting a new one. The Overseer; and Secretary were desired to inspect the place and report. Mr. E. Brown' applied for permission to j pass through some : land purchased /by the Board, in order to reach his,, own land.
