MELBOURNE.
August 7. —The new Ministry have obtained a vote of supply; they are bringing in an amended ' Lands Act, containing very liberal conditions. The smallpox is nearly stamped out at Bendigo, but sanitary precautions are still observed. Two constables have been charged with permitting a violation of the cordon sanitaire, and are under suspension pending inquiry. A murderous assault has been committed upon' Anastasia Maher by Lamuel Wright. Hagan, who interfered to protect her. received severe' injuries with an axe. which will possibly be fatal. The Condor sailed with 146 gold prospectors for the northern territory. There is to' be a new issue of Bilver coin to replace'those that are defaced. Duncan, the penal inspector, was stabbed .dangerously by Weechurcb, a prisoner at Pent'ridge. Flour, £15, 15s to £18 ss. Wheat, Victorian, *7s 2d; New Zealand, 7s. Oats,- New Zealand, 3s to 38 3d. Sugars firm. Tookeys offered at £5 to £5 2s 6d. ,'>."■* The Permissive Bill is receiving strong support and some opposition by petitions in the Assembly, :■•.. There has been a large importation of bulls and rams by the Wave of Life, from London. ' ' All patients have been discharged from the smallpox sanatorium at Sandhurst.
