NOTICES TO CORRESPONDENTS.
"Pai-isst the Potter." — Without expressing , any opinion on the statements and arguments adduced in your letter, we must decline to publish it, as, under existing circumstances, it appears to us that it would be highly injudicious to do so, as it is calculated to create a blaze that would not easily be extinguished. At present, that terrible bugbear to all interested in the cause of education — the religious difficulty— has not come prominently to the front, nor do we think that the circumstances ... to which your letter alludes necessitate its being brought forward. The whole question at issue is whether a schoolmaster is justified in mutilating the books given out for the use of schools, and in this light alone we believe that it will be viewed by the Central Board. Should they think fit to enter upon the stormy sea of religious teaching— which we do not for one moment anticipate — the responsibility must rest , upon their shoulders. For our own : part we decline to assume it, as would inevitably be the case did we give publication to your letter. .
