Telescope DINING TABLES made as they ought to be; by THOMAS SHONE, Cabinet Maker, 1734 Bridge-street. [advertisement.] To the Editor of the Nelson Evekiko Mail. QIR. — In a report of Mr Dobson's, printed in 0 the Evening Mail of July 25, be writes (in reference to the. crates recently constructed a little above the Foxhill bridge) that "they" (the crates) " have answered exceedingly well, but" (he continues) " I fear if the lower portion is not speedily removed ihey may have the effect of throwing the water against the north approach, 1 have" (he goes on to say) "directed the removal of the crates, which I fear will produce a pernicioxis effect, as soon as the works iii hand will permit." . . " r i What, I ask, are we to understand from this extraordinary piece of composition. First of all, we are tuid that the crates ; have answered " exceedingly well," and then we are told that their removal has been ordered as it is feared they will produce a pernicious effect "as soon as the worhs in. hand will permit." Then the Provincial Engineer goes on to tell us " that he fears there will be great difficulty and expense experienced before long in keeping the river under the bridge." I think there is too much reason for us' all to fear that such will be the ease.?/ hundreds of pounds are to be. spent in building crates that answer exceedingly well, by producing pernicious effects, and then a few months or weeks after they are completed, and at a further expense carrying out the Engineers directions for removing them. Next, Mr - Dobson deplores that the river, bed, immediately above the Government Dip, "is rapidly filling up AurVso it is by the action of my triangles, which. Mr- Dobson can't see, or won't see, or, lor some reason or other, totally ignores. The portion of- river bed so filling up is my land cut away, and partially reclaimed again by the filling up process referred to, preserving at once my paddock and the Government Dip from destruction ; and hitherto preventing the catastrophe of the river " flowing down its old channel at the foot of the terrace," which Mr. Dobson alludes to as a probable occurrence. Now, some of these triangles I have referred' to have been standing many years, and as long as they are maintained no such disaster as this can occur, and common sense free from prejudice, should have dictated the same simple and efficacious means for directing and keeping the river under the bridge. Jt:is not the rivers we have to fear, it is their unskilful management, Yours respectfully, - James Grove. EoxWll, August 7, 1872; ,- : - 1729 ;
