Central Bo aud op Education.-t-Io reference to the recent mutilation of school books by the master of one of the Provincial schools, Mr. Campbell gave notice tbat he would move at the next meeting of the Board a resolution to the effect that the mutilation of books belonging to tbe Board should be censured. Sir J. C. Wilson, C. 8., we are glad to. learn, Las been elected to the House: of Representatives for Heathcote, Canterbury, Great Satisfaction is said to be felt in Canterbury at the action taken by the Superintendents relative to railway works being brought under Provincial control. During the greater part of the time that the Public Health Bill — which will seriously affect the comfort, privacy," and health of colonists — was being considered in Committee in the House of Representatives, only two Ministers and twelve members were present. * The ceremony of turning the first sod of the Hutt railway has been postponed for a few days, in order to give time for more complete arrangements being made. Mr Brogden is anxious that the ceremony should take place with due eclat, as it will mark not only the inauguration of the Hutt railway, but in reality ofali the railway works of the colony. Mr Yogel will doubtless be hard put to invent fresh taxes. Willing to give him a helping' hand, we offar the following suggestions : — Au import duty of 5s per ton on coal, 3s per ton on sailing ships, 4s per ton On steamships, inhabited house duty on houses under £20 rental, and a tax on steam engines at the rate of 5s per horse power. These are quite as feasible imposts as twopenny cheques and receipt stamps. —Post.
