Petty Theft. — Peter Wootton was this mornicg charged with stealing a box of figs, the property of Jonah Ashburn. Prisoner, who admitted the offence, wnssentencedtoa fortnight's imprisoDment with hard labor, and to be once whipped. Weather Table— -"Old Biggs" has sent us tho following register of wet days in the month of July for the last twelve years :— ln 1861, five days; 1862, seven days; 1863, eleven dnya ; 1864, three days; 1865, seven days; 1866, eight days; 1867, sixteen days ; 1868, twelve days ; 18G9, hardly any, but dry and frosty; 1870, Cve days; 1871, fourteen days; 1872, up to 26th inst., ten days. Our West Coast Files speak of heavy rains and disastrous floods iv all directions. Mr. Acton Adams, of NelsoD, it is paid, has expressed his intention of coming forward as a candidate to represent the Inangahua district in the Nelson Provincial Council. — G.R. Argus. The Australasian concludes an article on the recent mail subsidy debate on the American Congress aa follows :- — "By the refusal of the subsidy ended the last chance of the scheme, which will only be remembered as an illustration of the impudence of an American shipowner, and of the utter incapacity of a Victorian Chief Secretary."
