Floods at Westport. — The Tiws of Friday last says : — The heavy downpour of rain, which, commencing on Sunday night, continued with but slight intermission until Wednesday mid- day, caused a considerable fresh in the river, and, as an inevitable consequence, the river and tide combined, washed away another slice of doomed Gladstone-street, necessitating the removal of more buildings. Mailer's Boot store on the side of the street, and the old Boatman's Arms on the other side, are now tbe corner bouses. At the foot of Kennedy street the river hss also made further encroachment, and the wharf is so insecure that the flooring has been removed for safety, and the heavier timbers will be lifted as quickly as practicable. A fine sample of twilled sheeting, woven by Mr Forbes, Hilton mills, Arbroath, Scotland, from pure New Zealand fibre is being exhibited at the rooms of the Canter* bury Flax Association. In consequence of the great rise in the price of iron standards, some landowners in the eastern provinces are using blue-gum standards instead. The latter are said to answer very well indeed, and to cost only about half as much as iron ones. Some of the towns in Vermont, having vaccinated most of their population, are now a little inclined to grumble, because the small- pox does not come along. There is a general feeling there that all the trouble has been taken for nothing. End of War. — What, after all , is the end of most wars? Nothing but this—that a number of elderly gentlemen meet together, in an official room, and sitting round a table covered with green cloth, quietly arrange all that might just as well have been arranged before the war began. The widow of a British Vice. Consul now lies bed-ridden and desolate at Athens. This may not seem a very remarkable circumstance, but the' old lady was formely Theresa Black, and to her Byron sang, V Maid of Athens, ere we part" ( -,;.v:/.u ■".,
