Tn the Upper House a resolution was carried, regretting that the Government had not appointed a representative ia the Council. In the Lower House Mr. O'Conor presented a petition signed by GOO persons, praying for fin inquiry re Westporfc Land Purchase. Pie contradicted the representations of the Nelson Colonist, and characterised the articles in that journal as coarse and malicious. Inquiry agreed to. Mr- Fox moved, and Mr. Stafford seconded, a congratulatory address to the Queen on the recovery of the Prince of Wales. Agreed to. Bills read the first time — Public Health; Drawbacks ; Tramways ; Grey mouth Harbor Works Validation. Mr. Luckie moved, in a weak speech, the address in reply. Mr. Sheahan, of Auckland, seconded. Mr. Stafford remarked (bat the speech studiously evaded committing the Government to anything or expressing anything likely to provoke discussion, consequently the Opposition would raise no issue. E-eply agreed to. Mr. Coliins presented a petition from certain residents iv Nelson, stating that Government Officers were carrying on business in Nelson to the lDJury of others not in the Government employ, auts asking the House to consider the matter.
