DCNkDIN, July 17. A large meeting at Lawrence carried resolutions protesting against laud sales on the goldfields by the Provincial Government as prejudicial to the interests of the goldfields ; and calling upon the General Government to prevent further sales, and to prosecute individuals guilty of late sales.
De. Haast has made a discovery in the Waipara district of a large and valuable deposit of moa bones, including several entire skeletons. Twenty-four cases of bones have arrived at the Canterbury Museum and more are comiog. The Wanganui Chronicle is responsible for the following :■— " We hear that whilst two Maoris were having a fight at Foxtoa on the Cth instant, one relieved the other of his'nasal organ hy biting it off. It required five Maoris to secure the cannibal." The right sort of settler is Mr. , who lives within a hundred miles of EaDgitikei, and who has ten children living, seven of whom are married (one aloDe of whom has eighteen children), sixty-five grandchildren, aud twenty-one great-grandchildren (his own age is eigbty-five) making a total of nearly one hundred people, many of whom are in a fair way to augment that number. The Canterbury Press says that the Rev. E. Bailey has been offered the incumbency of Reefton, by the Bishop of NelsoD. Bishop Suter formed the acquaintance of Mr, Bailey some years ago, and on his consecration to the diocese of Nelson, wished Mr. Bailey to accompany him to New Zealand. We believe that Mr. Bailey has declined the Bishop's offer, signifying his intention of returning to Eugland. Mr. Anthony Trollope was about to leave Sydney for Melbourne and New Zealand. This Land Sales in South Australia, for the month of June, amounted to 42,000 acres at the average price of 245. There are nearly 1500 co-operative stores in tbe Uuited Kingdom, with nearly 400,000 members. In the City Council in Melbourne, Inspector Kabat said, "..there are children ruuning about, the streets of Melbourne like dogs in Constantinople,- in hundreds, without anybody to look after them."
