The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, JULY 11, 1872.

Caledonian Society's Entertainment. — A very attractive programme has been published by the above Society of an entertainment to be given under its auspices at the Provincial Hall, to-morrow evening. The programme itself is, together with the low prices of admission, sufficient to draw a crowded house, but as the Society is, in the minds of many people, connected only with games and sports, it may be as well to remind them that it has other objects in view besides providing amusement for the public once a year. Among these are (we quote from the Society's prospectus) " the performance of deeds of charity ; the advancement of education ; the rewarding of acts of heroism ; the encouragement of national feats and pastimes ; and the obtaining and diffusing, among the members of the Society, national information." It will thus be seen that to-morrow evening's entertainment possesses attractions both for the charitably disposed, and for those who seek amusement. Lecture on the English Cathedrals. — There was a full audience at the Provincial Hall last night., when the Bishop

of Nelson delivered a lecture, for tin; benefit of the- All Sii'mta' Oman Fund, on the cathedrals of Great Britnin. Haviny given a slight sketch of the history nnd uses of cathedrals, his Lordship procer-ded to exhibit a scries, consisting of some twenty iu number, of the exteriors and interiors of some of these sacred buildings. The pictures, which were most beautifully colored photographs on glass, were shown by the aid of the oxy-hydrosen light, and culled forth repeated expressions of admiration from the numerous audience, especially thofoof St. Paul's and Rochester cnthedrals, and of Westminster Abbey, aa well as some of the monuments creeled in the latter buiMinp. The whole thing w«s a great success, which was to be attributed, not only to the artistic mniiuer in which the views were executed iiud exhibited, hut also to the very npproprinte «iid effective vocal and iusli umental music supplied by the members of the AH Sninis' choir under the leadership of their energetic conductor, Mr Kolloway, who presided at the harmonium. Some of the clio, rusee, which were well and carefully adapted to the scenes exhibited, wero given with excellent taste and precision, which must have been the result of constant practice, aud a special meed of praise is clue to the unseen lady who, as an accompaniment to the view of "The Sleeping Children " in Licbfielil Cathedra!, sun? " Angels ever bright and fair" with great sweetness. The evening's entertainment terminated with the siuging of the National Anthem, the words of which were displayed on the disc by means of the lantern, but prior to this .a vote of thatks to the Bishop was carried amid great applause on the motion of Mr. C. Hunter Brown seconded by Sir D. Mouro, who only echoed the sentiments of all present 'n expressing ibe great gratification they had experienced in listening to his Lordship's lecture, and in witnessing the beautiful views with which it was illustrated.
