_~ Matakitaki Dredging Company. — A meeting of shareholders will be held at the Masonic Hotel, this evening, to take - into consideration the desirability of winding up the Company. Mb. O'Conor. — A telegram from Westport says: — Large meeting called by Munro to condemn O'Conor. Resolution rejected. Amendment carried unanimously. Cheers for O'Conor. Groans for Munro. Accident. — We regret to learn that the accident recently reported as having happened to Benjamin Crisp, junr., has necessitated the amputation of the injured foot, symptoms of mortification having set in yesterday morning. The operation was successfully performed by Drs. Squires and Scaly, and the patient, we are glad to learn, was, by the latest account?, progressing favorably. Resident Magistrate's Court. — William Paap was this morning charged by John Cockram with having been guilty of perjury in certain evidence given j by him in the case heard on Wednesday last of Paap v. Cockram.: — Mr. Fell appeared for the prosecutor, and Mr. A. Adams for the prisonor, who was committed for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court. Netv Zealand University Scholarships. — We have received a telegram from Greville's agent; ' at Wellington which, as it is capable of more than one interpretation, we prefer to giyejust as. it reached us. It however appears that Nelson College, with its seventy scholars, has secured six out of the twenty scholarships offered for competition. As the other competing schools are educating not less than 600 youths at least, we may congratulate the Province on having done well in securing nearly a third of the prizes for which the whole colony has entered. Lecture on the English Cathedrals. — On Wednesday evening next the Bishop will deliver a lecture at the Provincial Hall on the Cathedrals of England, to be illustrated by some most beautiful dissolving views, which will l>e exhibited by the aid of the oxy-hydro<ren light. Among the building of which views will be f»ivpn may be named the cathedrals of Durham, Norwich, Winchester, Wells, Salisbury, LichGeld, Gloucester, Canterbury, and Westminster Abbey. There will nlso be two views of St. Paul's, ami by way of comparison will be shown ft. Peter's at Rome, St.. Mark's, Veuice, and the cathedtnl of Milan. Of some of these noble buildings there will be shown both the interior and t-xterior, and well as some of the monuments in Westminster Abbey. The views will be accompanied, by vocal and instrumental music, consisting of selections from Mozart, Handel, Webbe, Haydn, and others of the best composers. The proceeds are to be devoted to defraying the debt on All Saiols' Organ, and from the rapidity wiih which the tickets are already being disposed of, there is every reason to believe that tho Hall will be crowded.
