Goldmining Companies. — A Provincial Government Gazette, published on Tuesday last, contains the statements of aflairs of seventeen mining companies, tbe large majority of which are at work in the Inangahua district. ' Parish Meeting. — The annual meet- J ing of the parishioners of Christ Church, | for the purpose of electing churchwardens, vestrymen, &c, will take place at the Bishop's Schoolroom, to-morrow evening. We are requested to state' that, as matters of considerable importance will come before the meeting, it is hoped that there will be a full attendance. Pangatotara Road Board. — Tbe i ' meeting oi ratepayers took place at the office of the Board on Monday last, Mr. J. W. Gower in the chair. The following are the names of the candidates proposed, together with the number of hands held up for each :■— H. Young 25, A. O'Brien 23, T. Grooby 18, W. Spicer, 18, W. Hildreth 17, W. Guy 13, A. Beatson 11, W. •Jennings 9, E. Grooby 8, F. Grooby 8. The six first named were declared duly elected, aud the proceedings terminated with a vote of thanks to the chairman. j Dissolving Views. — On Wednesday evening next the Bishop of Nelson will give a lecture at the Provincial Hall on the Cathedrals of Great Britain, to be illustrated by some beautiful dissolving views . pf a character similar to thoße of Venice, which were bo greatly admired when exhibited two years ago. The views; are all of tbem photographs taken on glass, and are therefore perfectly faithful representations of the various buildings. Each view, will be accompanied by either .vocal or instrumental music appropoiate to the scene represented. therein contained. The damages were originally set down ot £148, but, the claim was reduced to £100, in order to bring the case within the jurisdiction of the Resident Magistrate's Court. — Mr. Acton Adams appeared for the plaintiffs, and Mr. Pitt for the defendant. Evidence was taken at considerable length, and ultimately judgment was given for the plaintiffs for the value of 280 sheep at 3s. 6d., being £49 with costs. — Mr. Pitt argued that as the Bench had estimated the full amount of damages sustained at £49, and the plaintiffs had voluntarily surrendered £48 in order to allow of the case being heard in that Court, they were only entitled to a judgment for £1, and he therefore aeked for costs.-— His Worship said that" he should take time lo consider the point, and would give judgment to-morrow morning at 11 o'clock. The Shareholders of the Prospectors Claim, Rainy Creek, have decided to erect machinery, consisting of a powerful engine and forty head of stampers. The Wanganui Herald says : — We understand that a gentleman of well-known business capacity is about originating a private company for the supply of gas to the town of Wanganui. His estimate of cost, based upon reliable data, is much less than the amount submitted to the Council.
