SYDNEY.
June 17. — Nicholls and Lester are to be executed . to-morro<v. There are numerous applications to witness the execution, and hundreds of tickets have been issued.
The Sydney Herald comments favorably on tbe San Francisco mail, and says that the lapse of the Duffy contract opens the way to fresh negotiations. The efforts already made to develop the trans-Pacific route prove that it is one that can never be abandoned, as, although hitherto it has resulted only in irregular and incomplete communication, its capabilities for postal services and passenger traffic cannot be ignored. The Herald considers that the opening of the route is- entirely owing to New Zealand, and says that the Duffy contract was sound in principle but altogether wrong in details.
