A Wholesale Boot Manufacturing Firm in Christchurch is making arrangements for obtaining a site for the establishment of a tannery in connection with their business. Two Men are reported to have been lost in the neighborhood of the Little Grey Saddle. Search parties are out looking for them on both sides of the range. Caution to Amatory Telegraphists. — The Marlborough Express says : — The other day a telegraph clerk at one of the stations telegraphed to a brother clerk some hundred miles away to the effect that his sweetheart was then in the office, and she had promised to marry him in a month. Now it so happened that the manager was in the operating room at tbe time, and, reading off the message by ear, he sent back a reply, which was short and severe: "You are fined £1 for allowing a stranger inside the office ; turn the woman out." Poor fellow! the "turn her out" tacked on to the money penalty was adding insult to injury. A Fatal Accident occurred at the Cooperative Star Company's claim at the Kanieri, on Thursday morning, says the West Coast Times, to a boy named Joseph Goodyer, who was only eleven years of age. The boy's duty was to hook on the trucks ascending the incline, and he was employed in that service about half-past five en Thursday morning, when a truck which had nearly reached the summit of the ascent got loose and ran back upon the boy, jamming him against a stump of a tree. The man who was receiving the trucks hastened down with all speed and extricated the boy, who remained insensible for about twenty minutes. He was brought down to Hokitika Hospital, but died shortly after admission. A Change. — Little more thau three years ago (says the Waikato Times) the fiat in front of our window was covered with the tents of imperial aud colonial troops. The steamers running on our rivers were the bearers of soldiers and warlike stores. The sole topics of interest were the advance or retreat of our troops, the last engagement, and the number of our countrymen who had fallen victims to the obstinacy and ignorance of the natives. Cattle are now running peacefully on the flat; the steamers are the bearers of articles of commerce; the topics of conversation are principally — When will the railway be finished? What crop is best to sow in order to realise a good profit ? And the subjects suggested for discussion in our columns come in for a fair share of attention, in which can be found neither accounts of battles nor rumors of war. All is peace. Every settler ia looking hopefully forward to the time when he will be, if not a rich man, one well to do in the world. We say, without fear of contradiction, that in no district in the colony has the settler greater reason to look hopefully forward We are blessed by nature with the two finest rivers in New Zealand, and our land only requires labor bestowed on it to grow almost anything the settlers may desire. ' A Mosquito Story. — Captain Jones, of Stonington, is responsible for the following : — On his passage from New York a few years ago, he observed one summer
afternoon a heavy cloud arise from the land, and, to his great surprh.e, approach the vessel. Suddenly it broke near him, and covered the decks with millions of mosquitos, while part of the flock went through the mainsail, leaving nothing but the bolt-ropeß hanging idly to the spars. Corroborative evidence to this astonishing tale was found in the person of a " downcast skipper," who heard the story, and who, on .omparing dates with the narrarator, declared that two days afterwards he was boarded by tbe same flock of mosquitos, and they all wore canvas breeches .
