The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, JUNE 20, 1872.

Pebsevebanoe^Mine. — We understand from a person who has just returned from Collingwood, that the prospects at the Perseverance Mine continue to be fovorable, and crushing will commence next week. UwiVEBSiTr Scholarships.— We understand that three of the Mathematical Scholarships recently competed for throughout New Zealand, have been awarded to Nelson candidates; Barnicoat, Blackett, and T. Campbell, it is said, being the successful individuals. Of the Classical Scholarships we have not yet re* ceived any information. Drawing - Room Entertainment. — The incessant rain of last night had again the effect of, reducing the audience at the Oddfellows' Hall to within very narrow limits, but the acting of Mr. Hoskins and Miss Colville delighted all present, especially in the little comedy A Comical Countess, To-night, we are glad to find, they intend to give selections from Hamlet. The Immbrbed Safe.— -The iron safe belonging to Messrs. Adams & Kingdon, which fell into the water when being shipped on board, the Lyttelton was recovered on Tuesday evening, by being dragged into shallow water by means of a chain passed *ouad it. The Water had penatra-

ted and thoroughly saturated the documents, which had swelled to such an extent that it was found impossible to get them out without damaging the safe. Accident at the Wharf. — Yesterday afternoon as the Taranaki was being brought alongside the wharf, the bystanders were somewhat alarmed at seeing her coming end on to them, and there was a general clear out of the way of the dangerous looking visitor. A few seconds later, and a cracking of timber was heard, followed by the speedy exit from Messrs. N. Edwards & Co.'s booking office of the clerk, who was not a little startled at finding the end of the steamer's bowsprit making its appearance through the wall of the office just a little above the window. Fortunately she had but very little way on her, and her curiosity being allayed by a passing glance at the interior of the office, she retired, and on her next attempt came up to the berth alloted to her in less formidable style.
