The Nebraska sailed from Auckland on Friday last with 200 passengers and a large cargo. The Freemasons of Auckland sent by the Nebraska a congratulatory address to the Prince of Wales on his recovery. The Otago limes reports that some Chinamen are making £12 per week per man, by gold-digging on the banks of the river Manuherikia. Court of Appeal. — In this Court at Wellington, on Friday last, Mr. Harry Pitt, solicitor, of Blenheim, was suspended for four years. The larrikins are disturbing even the peaceful streets of New Plymouth. The policeman of the town is unable to put a stops to their pranks. The New Zealand Steam Shipping Company have preceoted £25 towards the experjses of the interprovincial and intercolonial regatta to be held at Wellington next year. Mr Mills, an ironfounder at Wellington, last week sued the captain and owners of the ship England for £50, value of goods damaged on the voyage. In the course of the enquiry it was elicited that much water had descended the after hatchway in the Bay of Biscay. i A verdict was given for plaintiff. A " Separation " Meeting. — A Patea correspondent in noticing a meeting held to discuss the question of separation from Taranaki, says : — After a long and desultory conversation, ranging from the northwest passage to Darwin's Origin of Species, the meeting ultimately, on a division, adjourned for six months. We notice that no less than nine newspapers on the Coast condemn Mr. W. H. Harrison's Nominated-Delegated-Pro-vincial - County- Road -Board - Municipal - scheme as recommended to the Genera) Government, and we have not yet met with one supporter of the member's views on the question, in the town of Greymouth. — Greymouth Star. Bad News for the Dentists. — An Otago correspondent Bays: — "No more wrenchiug of the gums — no more toothache, for we have discovered a sovereign remedy. Tortured by this painful disease, and almost bordering upon frenzy, a man working in the fields, lay down close to some bush. In his agony he seized the leaves of the tutu plant and pressed the juice into the aperture. Strange to relate, the cure was instantaneous, and he has since frequently applied the same remedy with equal success. Whether the juice ol the plant will prove effectual in all cases, I am not aware, but a knowledge of the circumstances is well worthy of being niched in our Colonial Tademecum." — ; Grey Miver Argus. ; v
The Otago police force and escort service is estimated to cost £12,000 for the ensuing year. A Rtimoe is in circulation to the effect that a vacancy is likely to arise in the representation of the Wellington country , district by the elevation of the present member, Mr. Brandon to the Legislative Council. The yield -of the Auckland goldfields ; from the 16th May to the 1 lth June is 8925 ounces from 6117 tons of stone, being a decrease, as compared with last , month, of 700 ounces. The dividends have been decreased during the same [ period by £12,311. i The Fijis. — The Kenitworth arrived , at Auckland, last Saturday, from Fiji. She reports a shocking scene at the execution of Francis, the murderer of Marian . Renny. Francis dropped 6ft, and hung ; quietly two minutes. He then shouted , for some one either to 6hoot him or to cut him down. He was cut down, , recovered, and was reprieved — The King, in opening Parliament said he had received a despatch from Earl Kimberley, stating that Fiji had been recognised '• by Great; Britain as a de facto '■ Government. — The brig Carl has been seized by H. M. S. Cossack, and the crew have been charged with kidnapping. They were released after inquiry. — Underwood's murderer has beea tried by 1 the Supreme Court. In his defence be pleaded that great cruelty had been practiced on the plantation. He was convicted of manslaughter, and sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment. — The notorious Captain Hayes has been arrested at Samoa by the U. S. s. s. Narraganset, and coni veyed with the vessel to San Francisco i for trial.
