The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, JUNE 15, 1872.
A pressure of other matter has compelled us to hold over the Suez Telegrams and " The Week " until Monday. . Local Committee of Education.— BrwAEA. — For this district Messrs. It. Pattie (chairman), W. Askew, W. Jenkins, and J. Fowler, were elected. Mr. E. Barn was elected as representative at the Central Board. Public Meeting.— lt will be seen by advertisement that Mr. O'Conor has called a public meeting at the Provincial Hall, on Monday evening next, when he will explain " his own and the conduct of the Provincial Council " during the session just concluded. Deattin g-room Entertainment. — Another entertainment, under the patronage of his Honor the Superintendent, was given at the Oddfellows' Hall, last night to a well-filled house. The first piece was a little French comedy entitled Book the Third, Chapter the First ! and although there was but little in the plot, it gave an opportunity to Miss Colville, of which she readily availed herself, of showing what a really excellent actress she is. This was followed by a reading of Bell's Poem Mary Queen of Scots, which was given by Miss Colville, in a manner which showed her to be as great a proficient in elocution as in acting. The concluding piece, A Conjugal Lesson, brought to a termination a very pleasant evening's entertainment. A Councillors' Conspiracy. — Summonses, we are informed, have been served upon Messrs. Joseph Shephard, D. M. Luckie, Alexander Reid, George Donne, and Frank Guinness, to appear at the Resident Magistrate's Court, on Monday, June 24, to answer to the claim of Mr.. Eugene Joseph O'Conor, the particulars of which ar© as follows : — The plaintiff sues the defendants for that they, on or about the 4th June, 1872, and thereafter unlawfully, falsely, and maliciously did conspire, confeder, and agree together to cause the plaintiff to be brought into public hatred and contempt, and did, in pursuance of their said conspiracy, unlawfully, falsely, and maliciously procure the Provincial Council of the Province of Nelson to pass a certain resolution falsely declaring (inter alia) that the conduct of the plaintiff in reference to certain matters therein mentioned had been unparalleled and unprecedented in the annals of the Council, highly derogatory to its character, and demanding the severest reprobation ; and also a certain other resolution that his Excellency the Governor should be humbly prayed to refuse the issue of certain Crown ' Grants to the plaintiff for lands purchased by him under the circumstances so set oat
in the first-mentioned resolution, whereby the plaintiff has been brought into public hatred and contempt, and has suffered great pain of mind, and has been put to great expense in clearing himself ,of the charges made against him. And the plaintiff claims One Hundred Pounds.
' Losses op the London and Liverpool Insurance Company. — " JEules," in the Australasian writes : — Although companies Lave neither bodies to be kicked, nor souls to be saved, they sometimes (not often) are entitled to sympathy. And especially do they earn that inexpensive kind of regard when by foresight and precaution they show ability to overcome that which would otherwise be a crushing disaster. At the annual meeting of the Liverpool and London Insurance Company it appears that the losses paid during the year had reached nearly £1,200,000, one half of this loss arising from the burning of Chicago. Despite this unparalleled misfortune, the accounts submitted showed that the company was in a prosperous position, with large, well-secured assets.
