WHAT'S IN A NAME? — o A potitician ! ah ! ah ! ah f A name I deem 's familiar ; Who always must be carrying on A controversy — never done. He wields his politician rod, Oft rides o'er people's heads rough shod, And calls for vengeancß from the skies, Who will not think with him likewise. In logic, is a great critic, Perhaps well-skill'd in rhetorick; Sententious, cynical a bit, To match his learning and his wit. 'Tis plain he is not ortho-dox, But crafty always like the fox; Still aims, and points, and looks to tease, And styl'd for war as well as peace. He proves, disproves, affirms, denies, Objects himself— himself replies; Maintains the very truth of power ; Is right and wrong in half-an-hour. With fancy kindled heat he glows, While o'er the news his spirit flows ; Calls blows and knocks, a consolation, The way to get a reformation. From day to day he sits at ease, A law unto himself he is ; Maintains a privilege safe and clear, With less of conscience than of care But watch his movements one by one, Tho' all his friends cry out — well done ! Hfc's like the flower which in the main, That from compression soon doth wane. But still his situation's great, For facts are stubborn things to State ; May he not have a patriot's hope, To give a pleasing fancy scope ? As sterling coin then him compare, Or dainty dish that's very rare ; But he's mistaken very much, Who often thinks that he is such. Nelson, June 11, 1872. J. B.
