"HE MUST HAVE HEARD."
To the Editor op the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir — By reading your digest on the late land purchase in Monday's issue my indignation was so roused that I went down to the Coudci'l Chamber in the hope of witnessing at least a portion of the punishment ou the culprit, which I thought he deserved; but I must admit that I name away doubly disappointed. First, that the case did not come on, and secondly, because I found my indignation considerably moderated. Ou this account I have ventured to request you to publish this letter. Your leader states that several members declared that seated where he was, Mr. O'Conor must have heard. This implies that presence in the room and within a certain distance necessitates that impression is made on the nerves ; this I truly endorsed ; but since my visit to the Council Chamber, I am compelled to admit I tvas wrong; the cause of this conviction is as follows. On a question before the Committee being put and a division called, the hell was runjr, time called, door looked, the name of a member seated within ten teet of the clerk and his bell was culled ; no reply ; called again, then the hon. member turned coolly to ask what the question was ; and more strange, the hon. member was one of the several members before named. I am compelled to admit that the impression I had received vanished like mist, »nd caused me to aek myself, why they should give Mr. O'Couor fhe credit of being more acute in an auricular sense than themselves ? I hope rhat the hon. member alluded to will have charity sufficient to allow that, notwithstanding bis presence in the Committee Room, aud vicinity to the sitters, he may not, have heard ; in fact, a 1 I waut him to •lo is to strike out the "must." Yours, Ike.,. Charity.
