The Auckland City CoudcU and insurance agents have presented Mr. Inspector JB-roham with a reward of £500 for his gallant capture of Haley, the incendiary. The New Zealand Herald notes it as somewhat remarkable that amid all the talk there Has lately been on the suV«ject of reformatories for boys-, the idea qt a prison ship has never been suggested, in which to keep lads of a certain age, and teach them the business of sailors. It strongly urges the experiment being tried. There are 56 boys and 45 girls at present in the Industrial School,' Dunedin. Besides receiving educational instruction, the boys are employed alternately in keeping the garden in full workiag order, and the girln in general household work, sewing, ,&c. The average cost per child is 4s. 10|d. per week. The following are the reasons given by the Otago police force for their recent action in striking for an increase in pay : —" That they were receiving lower pay than the working men, and 3s. per day less than the gaol warders ; that they could not .live on their present rate of pay; while some of the old members of the force referred to the arguments that had been used in the Provincial Council, which implied that the services of the police, were not in the eyes of the members of the Council equal to those of the gaol warders,, while they (the police) considered themselves to be superior, and further that the language used by several members iv the Provincial Council was insulting to the force, and derogatory to them as men."

Chloral Drinking, according to the physicians, is superseding absinthe, opium, and alcoholic stimulants among the better classes in Europe and America. An insidious sedative, its use grows more dangerous on the tippler than actively intoxicating drinks. The manufacture of this drug is the best evidence of the extent of its use. Tn Europe, its production has become one of the leading chemical indastries, and it is sold by the tun. Baron Liebig affirms that one German chemist manufactures and sells half a tun per week. The London Spectator says : — "Taking chloral is the new and popular vice, particularly among women, and is doing at least as much harm as alcohol. The drug is kept in thousands of dressing-cases ; and those who begin to use it often grow so addicted to it, that they pass their lives in a sort of contented stupefaction. Chloral drunkards will soon be an admitted variety of tbe species. 20 to 30 grains will, in many cases, send a person to sleep from 10 to 12 hours ; this will give some idea of what its sale by the tun represents." Thjs International Football Match. — The return match at football between England and Scotland was played at Kennington-oval on Saturday; the aides, however being chosen chiefly from the metropolitan clubs. The Scotch did not have their full number, in consequence of Mr. W. H. Gladstone, M.P., who had been expected to play, not putting in an appearance, but a substitute was allowed. They played eleven a side, and according to the Association rules, which differ from Rugby, " hacking " and " touching ,the ball with the hands " not being allowed. Cannoning with the shoulder is permissable, but there is no hugging, scrimmaging, or running with tbe ball. The English won the choice o( ends, and first kick off, and in the course of a quarter-of-an-hour made so good a fight, that a goal was obtained by a capital kick from J. C. Clegg, Sheffield. The play lasted for an hour and a quarter after that, but no further result was obtained, as only goals count. There were some near shaves, the ball once going between the outer rope and the goal post, which gave rise to a shout from the spectators, but Mr. Morton, who was an active and übiquitous umpire, undeceived the hopeful Englanders. There was another almost as close in tbe. Scotch camp. The English therefore held the palm. — Home Paper. The Qhristians of Auckland certainly do love eaob other. Proof of this is. contained in the following, letter to the Cross: — ** To the Editor— Sir, — I notice in the Cross of Monday that the Dissenters are about to pray for the Roman Catholics. Let me suggest to our fellow-worshippers that we have a week of prayer, on behalf of the Dissentere. One good turn deserves another. Yours, &c.,— Catholic.

" The twaddling season " is the name given by the Otago Daily Times to the present month, becauße the Otago, Nelson, and Wellington Provincial Councils, and the Parliaments of Victoria and New South Wales are now in session. Messrs. Dodson, Fell, & Co., received returns by last mail of 71 boxes of Phormium sold in London on 27th March last, 42 bales at £36; 20 do, sea damaged, at £35; 3 do, at £33 10 3 ; 2 do, at £28 10s; 3 do tow, at £15. This lot was manufactured by Mr. J. F. Hathaway. — Express. It is estimated that during the last five centuries more than £50,000,000 worth of real estate has been washed away from the eastern coast of England by the encroachments of the sea. A number of villages and towns which used to be set down on the old maps have entirely disappeared.
