"SIR ORACLE."
To the Editor of the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir,—lt is quite refreshing to witness the burst of virtuous indignation from some of the self-assumed immaculate members of the Council on a late land sale—Wangapeka, Mount Owen, Doran's Reef, &c, must pale their ineffectual fires in face of the recent political courtmartial. It is to be hoped tbat this is merely a prelude to a higher phase of morality than is generally accorded to many sitting in that solemn conclave. Without touching upon the sius of omission or commission of any member, one may be allowed to point out a singular phenomenon — surpassing the second sight of Heller, namely, the fact of a very solemn member rising and gravely asserting that another member " must have heard every word." A smart man may swear to what he has seen or heard; but how he can swear to what another man " must have heard '' is something beyond common comprehension. Tour readers may be asked how this kind of evidence would be taken in a a judicial investigation —an investigation which all must desire should take place on this somewhat spiteful proceeding. Yours, &c, Tu Quoque. Nelson, June 10.
