The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, JUNE 8, 1872.

Local Committee op Education. — The election of members of the Town Local Committee took place to-day, when Messrs. Wigzell, R. Burn, D. Burns, Webster, and J. Percy were elected. We shall publish a full report of the proceedings on Monday. Dinner to Mr. Luckie. — A complimentary dinner, to which between 50 and 60 sat down, was given to Mr. D. M. Luckie, M.H.R., at M'Gee's Hotfl, last night. In the absence of Mr. J. H. Levien, who was prevented by illness from attending, the chair was taken by Mr. Augarde. The dinner was an excellent one, and a very pleasant evening was spent by all present. Home Mail. — According to the present notice of the Postoffice, the outgoing Mail will close here on Monday, at 9 o'clock in the morning. We learn, however, there is a probability of the time of closing being extended, as the Superintendent has telegraphed to the Postmaster - General, urging the importance of detaining the Phoebe in Wellington till the Nebraska arrives with the Suez mail. If the arrangement proposed by his Honor is carried out, the public will be able to reply by San Francisco to tho correspondence received by Suez. Evening Concert. — The concert given last night by Mrs. Palmer and several well-known, amateurs was an entire success, and on all sides we hear most flattering comments upon the various items on the programme, some approving of this song, others of that glee and so on, the general feeling being one of tbe most complete sr iisfaction. A pressure of other matter prevents our giving a more extended notice of whai was, without doubt, a most pleasant and successful concert. (, Church Meeting. — An influential and well-attended meeting of the Church residents and others in the district of Suburban North, was held at the Schoolhouse, Clifton Terrace, on Tuesday evening last, the Rev. G. H. Johnstone, minister of tbe district, in the chair, to concert measures and make the necessary arrangements for erecting a church at that place. No less than six sites were offered, and a subscription list of above £140 produced. Resolutions were passed unanimously, affirming the expediency of proceeding at once with the good work, " wbich was indeed necessitated by the ruinous condition, and insufficient extent and accommodation of the schoolhouse, which has been used for Divine worship heretofore." A committee of ladies and gentlemen was appointed to collect further subscriptions, and a Building Committee was also organised — the Rev. G. H. Johnstone, chairman, and Messrs. T. DodsoD, sen., W. Oldham, D. Barnett, W. Northam, W. H. Turner, treasurer, and T. C. Batcheior, secretary — to fix on a site and carry cut the design. The Canterbury Provincial Engineer is now engaged in preparing a report as to the best site for the erection of a patent slip in Port Lyttelton. James Ikying, a railway employee at Canterbury, has been ordered by the Provincial Council to be dismissed for declaiming against the Government and the Council at a public meeting, and for agitating against them. Austin and Edwards have " sold " the Thames people considerably, by advertising a programme, taking the money at the gate, and only performing one of the feats advertised, Edwards doing his mile. General indignation was rife. The traffic receipts on the Lyttelton and Christchurch line during the month of April were £3561 13s, as compared with £3423 7s 9d for the same month of 1871. On the great South line the receipts were £1748 6s lld, as compared with £2318 3s 4d for the corresponding month of 1871.
